What is a work of “feminist” literature or film?- Caitlinmarie Ramirez

In my opinion a work of “feminist” literature or film is a work that aims to empower women. These works can be created by either male or females and aim to portray women either in a dominant position or their eventual rise to dominance. Theses works focus on the struggles of womankind as well as their strengths in overcoming obstacles. Various themes that come about in “feminist” works would be gender inequalities, economic inequalities, sexuality, and other topics related to a woman’s natural rights.
The men in these works can be aggressors who hinder the progress of female protagonist. Men can create emotional, financial, and even psychological barriers for the women, but some of the men present in these works can also be supportive in the women’s aspirations. The main point is that a male is not a necessity in these women’s lives because it has to be emphasized that a woman has freedom and control over her own life. An alternate “feminist” work might show the opposite; a case where a woman fails to reach her aspirations might stir emotion in readers or viewers making them want to support women’s achievements and rights in the real world.

  1. A text that is feminist can definitely "empower" women -- perhaps just by shedding light on a topic formerly considered taboo. (PASSING is an example of a text that does so regarding several taboos.)
