Melinda Medina: 20th Century Women Writers

Melinda Medina
English 375-03 (Section D)

What is a work of "feminist" literature or film?

Feminism has generally been viewed as being the fight of women to obtain equality and get the same rights that men have. Feminist do not only desire to gain access to all of the opportunities that men have access to, but to break down all the barriers that are set up to oppress them in every aspect. Feminist desire to break down the total social construction of sex and gender
Feminist literature and films deal with issues such as sexual oppression, gender roles, social expectations of women and what is expected of women according to biblical or religious doctrine. These works expose the lack of equality in political, social and economic rights for women.

Feminist help to further establish the fight of women to obtain political, social and economical equality. Feminist literature and films are expected to deal with feminist issues explicitly or have underlying symbolism aimed at feminist issues. Feminist literature and films sometimes deals with patriarchal societies or figures, where male domination and superiority lead to a complete take over of women’s rights. These kind of patriarchal societies created in literature and films display how much women are oppressed and are viewed as the inferior sex in society.

  1. Melinda,
You are right that feminist literature (and films) can deal with so many of these issues connected either directly or less directly -- to women and gender issues, as well as to oppression in social hierarchies. You pick up on many of the ways a feminist text can operate.
